The city of Athens has a long and rich history, holding a prominent place in Greek mythology and in the hearts and minds of millions of people around the World. In the 5th century BC, the golden age of Athens, the Parthenon on the Acropolis was built. Architectural examples of the city's rich history can be visited throughout the Historic Center of Athens, the Ancient Marble Stadium, the ancient marketplace known as the Agora, and the ancient theatre.
Known as the "Cradle of Democracy and Western Civilization", Greece and Athens are also the birthplace of the Ancient and Modern Olympic Games respectively. The city had the honour of hosting the 2004 Olympic Games and enjoyed major changes: a new International Airport, new metro lines, a ring road around the city and new landscaping to add millions of indigenous trees and shrubs to the region. The Athens Olympic Games have added a significant chapter to the history of the city and leave behind, besides the successful organization, a legacy of infrastructure and technology for Greece.
The main attraction in Athens is of course the Acropolis, also known as the "Sacred Rock". The Acropolis stands high above the city of Athens reminding us of its past glory. On the hill under the Acropolis, you will find the old part of the city called Plaka, nowadays the tourist center of Athens, where one can find various shops with Greek crafts, ancient ruins and Byzantine churches.
